Almost every pregnant woman in Germany has a folic acid deficiency

According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), the daily folic acid requirement for women is 300 micrograms. However, most people consume considerably less folic acid than recommended in their normal diet: As one study showed, three quarters of all women do not even reach 70 percent of the target value. In expectant mothers, the folic acid requirement rises to almost double that, namely to 550 micrograms per day. Of 21,433 pregnant women who were examined for their folic acid status as part of the Baby Care Program of the statutory health insurance funds, the daily intake was below the 70 percent limit in 94 percent. Two out of three women did not even reach half of the recommended daily requirement.
