Reasons why intestinal flora gets out of balance

Our intestines are populated with billions of bacteria. They help with digestion and produce important nutrients. An intact intestinal flora acts like a barrier; it controls which substances enter the intestine from the body, and vice versa. In addition, about 70 percent of our body’s immune cells are located in the intestine. If the interaction of different microorganisms is disturbed, this can affect the whole body.

However, the intestinal flora easily gets out of balance. Poor diet or some medications can contribute to a decrease in the number of beneficial bacteria and allow unfavorable microorganisms to take over. Some diseases can also affect intestinal health. For some people, psychological stress also affects digestion. Intestinal problems are therefore a widespread phenomenon, especially in industrialized countries.
