In the case of folic acid deficiency, women should start taking a folic acid preparation at least four weeks before conception and continue this at least until the end of the first trimester. The specific treatment depends on the extent of the individual risk.
Should a high-dose intake be necessary, in consultation with the doctor, the German guidelines recommend ruling out a possible vitamin B12 deficiency. The reason is because this could indicate a certain form of anemia, and in said case taking the folic acid preparation might not be useful.
Recommended intake period: at the latest four weeks before conception until the end of the first trimester.
